Why SOUL SOLO?
The name speaks of my personal style. I play solo and I like to play with soul (i.e. from my heart) instead of following a set programme, thus making each event a unique musical experience.

Style & Uniqueness
Rather than just playing a series of written pieces of music, I like to improvise, letting the music and melodious sounds of the harp create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere or set the mood for a romantic event. However, I am happy to play a few pieces and can learn a particular piece with advance notice.
I am also a songwriter and singer. If desired, I can sing a song while playing the harp (for example during the signing of the register). I can sing in English or French and have songs of my own composition that may be used.

Options & Price
Currently, the standard fee is R1000 for the first hour. This includes my travelling, transport and insurance costs. After the first hour, the standard fee is R500 per hour but I prefer to give a quote depending on what is required and on the couple’s budget. Please don't hesitate to contact me.

Background
Davina Mortlock was born in 1979 in Porrentruy, a small town in the French-speaking region of Switzerland.
She completed her compulsory education in Switzerland and successfully graduated from High School in 1997. After graduating, she spent eight months in the United States where she studied Christian ministry and theology in Charlotte, North Carolina. From 1998 to 1999, she worked as a volunteer at the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, Israel. There, she met her husband and they got married in August 2000. They continued to live in Israel until eventually moving to South Africa in 2003. She recently started her own business, Soul Solo, with the intention of playing the harp at weddings, functions or events of any kind.

Musical History
Davina’s love and interest for music started early, fuelled by her family’s musical flare. She sang and performed at church and school events from the time she was three. At the age of four, she was sent to a weekly musical theory class, and she successfully passed the final exam required for further studies at the conservatory at the age of 14.
When she was six, her parents gave her the choice of which instrument she would like to play. Without hesitation, Davina was adamant she would play the harp like King David, whose story she loved. Unsuccessful at convincing her otherwise, her parents relented and Davina attended private harp lessons for the next 11 years in Switzerland. At first, she played a rented Celtic harp until she was ready to progress on to the Concert harp. She has now been the proud owner of a beautiful David concert harp for 13 years.
During her time in Israel, Davina started to write songs and to improvise on the harp. Since then she continues to develop her own style and enjoys singing her songs while playing. Although she has had a classical training, she likes to create fresh compositions on the harp and let the moment inspire her.
While in Israel, Davina also attended private voice lessons for two years and developed a love for jazz music.
Davina has performed publicly on numerous occasions throughout her life. Presently, she is a lead vocalist of a music band and is performing regularly on stage.
